The Other Selves
The Other Selves is the first performance event of what will be a busy schedule at Echo Echo this autumn. The first (almost) normal season since 2019.
Benno Voorham was artist in residence at Echo Echo when the Covid19 pandemic struck in March 2020. He was in the process of completing the creation of a new solo dance-theatre show called The Other Selves. He showed the piece at Echo Echo on 14th March 2020 but only to five or six masked, socially distanced people. That was disappointing and strange. Not the best finish to the residency.
Benno has kindly returned to Echo Echo to complete the project properly. He has been with us since the beginning of the month working to remount the show and to add and edit it with the benefit of the time for reflection and thought over the past couple of years.

The Other Selves is for audiences of 16yrs upwards (brief nudity in video projection). Duration +/- 60 minutes.
THE OTHER SELVES
A reflection on ageing. The memory and anticipation of ordinary traumas and tragedies. The histories that are embedded in the way you feel your movement. The sufferings of others that have stuck to the skin, the bones the ligaments and which you carry with you. The inevitability of a continuing, perhaps pathetic, conversation with yourself... between yourselves... about who you are, who you have been... who you still might become...
The skeleton of this solo is a series of letters between Anton and Anton, the protagonist of this solo. Letters about different topics related to different fears, ageing and desire. The material of the solo varies from movement scenes, to videos and text. What all the materials have in common is a poetic sense, revealing the hidden, deeper layers of the protagonist's inner life.
The Other Selves was made during three residency periods; at the Fabrik Potsdam, Studio ADA in Berlin and Echo Echo in Derry, between November 2018 and March 2020.

About Benno Voorham
Benno Voorham is originally from The Netherlands but has lived for many years in Stockholm. He dances and teaches internationally with recent projects in Georgia, Jordan and Moldova as well as in Sweden. His work includes a long term commitment to projects with refugees and displaced people. His projects have been supported by many foundations as well as by Swedish government funds. He’s been to Derry several times before; the first time in 1996 when he toured a duet called Die Versteinerte Haut (Petrified Skin) all around Ireland. He has been a regular collaborator with Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company including as part of the Motion Ensemble in 2013 and in presenting the intensely moving piece, Vice Versa, with Abdalla Omari (who is also designer of The Other Selves), at the Echo Echo Festival of Dance and Movement in 2017.
