A Physical Comedy Workshop with emphasise on Physicality, Presentation, Prop Play, Developing
New Material and Working with a Live Audience
Using a combination of competitive and collaborative games, movement exercises, provocation and
slapstick, this workshop focuses on developing the core essentials for actors, comedians, improvisers, circus
artists and clowns. Those essentials are: unbridled curiosity, physical and mental agility and a desire to
explore and perform in a more physical and visual way.
Live performers have a powerful desire to relate on all levels. Clown and physical play are born out of this
unbridled curiosity. This workshop will give you valuable insights into the creation of original material,
improvising and playing with any audience, and a greater understanding of how to use your body to express
thoughts, emotions and character.
The intensive is lead by Joe Dieffenbacher, known for his stage and cabaret work under the name nakupelle.
He was Director of Clown Conservatory-San Francisco, Master Teacher of Clown, Slapstick, Maskmaking &
Performance at the Dell'Arte School, and has taught at Belfast Community Circus, Northern Ireland, Teater
Studion, Stockholm, Sweden, Wuqiao International Circus Festival, Shijiazhuang, China, Circus Factory, Cork,
Ireland, and ACT-San Francisco. He collaborated on and was featured in, the Closing Ceremonies for London
2012 Olympics and Paralympics, toured as a featured character in the Circus Tour and TT3 with Take That,
directed Physical Comedy at Shakespeare’s Globe and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London, the
Scottish National Opera in Glasgow, and collaborated with artists and ensembles all over the world
developing original material for stage, street, cabaret and circus.
Please Note: Participants should come with ideas or new routines they want to develop into performance
material. Any skills involved should already be mastered as we will focus on the presentation around the
skill not the skill itself
