From these shores

‘From these shores’ is an exhibition of paintings from two very different perspectives.

Two artists gazing across a body of water, one island, two countries and an unclaimed border. The act of painting can often be negated in today’ s modern art world. Indeed, there are many galleries which no longer exhibit paintings. The act of creating artwork has transmuted and transcended towards the philosophical, geographical, and humanistic elements of this and other multidimensional lines of inquiry. A fine endeavour and necessary evolution. However, when all of that, which can also be communicated through the gesture of painting, brings us to question and wonder, consider this exhibition as one to sit with and ponder your own perspectives, from your own shore.

Rikki van den Berg

Moville, Co. Donegal

Rikki’s expressionistic landscapes capture the raw, emotional essence of nature. These, mostly small works, distil the beauty and intensity of the environment into vibrant, dynamic brushstrokes. Focusing on expressive interpretations rather than precise details, she invites the viewer to deeply connect with the mood and atmosphere of each scene, experiencing the landscape in a more personal and evocative way.

Harry McMahon

Portstewart, Co. Londonderry

Harry’s work is underlined by a masterly knowledge of form and colour which translates the landscape as visual poetry. In his own words, “Always there was the Foyle, the stillness of Inishowen on the horizon and the rushing, fleeting glimpses of nearby shoreline”. In this series of paintings, Harry investigates and observes the Foyle from the eastern shore, travelling by train, capturing the moment and then the next. His approach to painting is sculptural on a delicate level. His work morphs between impressionistic, abstract and realistic form, tuning into his experience and memory, and always from a playful, curious perspective.

Exhibition continues to 8th November and is available to view during building opening hours. Additional opening times may be possible on request.
