About the workshop
This workshop will introduce some of the methods used in creating THE COVE and will give participants the opportunity to explore the process of Embodying Landscape and beginning to create movement material through it.
Embodying landscape is a particular application of Echo Echo’s practice of Poetic Movement in which dance is conceived of as having a similar relationship to everyday movement as poetry does to everyday language.
Poetic Movement practice involves developing an understanding of the underlying grammar and syntax of movement through disciplined attention to, among other things, phrasing, proximity, disposition, and embodied memory and imagination.
The Embodying Landscape process has a contemplative aspect to it, in which the attention is drawn to the way that a disciplined and physicalised process of remembering locations which hold meaning for a person can produce a desire to move in ways that can be on a range from directly descriptive to deeply mysterious.
Drawing together some of the general principles of Poetic Movement and the specific process of Embodying Landscape we can begin to create movement poems which have thematic coherence and which resonate with a watcher at the same time as maintaining a poetic depth.
It is hoped that there will be enough time to watch each other’s short compositions or improvisations at the end of the workshop.
You do not need any previous experience to join this workshop. It will be as challenging and interesting for experienced movers and performers as for beginners. It will help enormously if you attend the performance of THE COVE the evening before the workshop.
Wear clothes that allow you to enjoy your movement.
