Festival Artists-in-Residence

Kristyn Fontanella & Moya Sweeney

Kristyn and Moya will be artists-in-residence throughout ‘Tradition and Beyond’. The residency will form part of Kristyn's continued research into a new solo,‘hop back’ (working title), which will later become a new production for Kristyn’s “Fontanella Dance Company”.

This residency will consider many questions: Where did my dance come from, how do I use it currently in my practice and where is it going? Can I trace my Irish dancing family tree? How did they dance/create, and how has that shaped me as the choreographer I am today? How can I use this history to create a new movement dialogue? How does this connect to MY ancestors and where they danced?

Kristyn Fontanella is a choreographer based in County Galway, who focuses her in-depth knowledge of Irish dancing and presents it in a contemporary context. Having toured for many years with Riverdance, Lord of the Dance & lead soloist in Gaelforce Dance, her current mission is to show another side of the complex world of Irish Step dancing to future generations.

Moya Sweeney is a button accordion player from Trillick, Co. Tyrone, and now based in Derry. As an accomplished Irish traditional musician and tutor, Moya has performed across Ireland and Europe. She has achieved an UIster title in 15-18 Button Accordion and All Ireland medals in Céilí Band competitions. She recently graduated from Ulster University with a First-Class Honours in Music and is currently co-ordinator of Acadamh Ceoil, Derry.

Festival Artists-in-Residence

Aneta Dortová & William Troy

Within the Dortová-Troy residency a sense of belonging, questioning identity, and the effects of labelling on perception are the starting points of the research. Using contemporary dance, percussive dance, and contemporary composition to create a choreography, inspired by a composition inspired by a choreography, reacting to the new environment which we will find ourselves in.

Native of Plzen, the Czech Republic, Aneta Dortová is a percussive and contemporary dance artist and a musician with a background in Irish step dancing and sean-nós dancing. Her personal style blends contemporary dance with body percussion and percussive dance traditions of Ireland, Canada, United States, England, Scotland and Spain.

William Troy is a guitarist and composer residing in Laois. He trained in classical guitar in the Laois School of Music and is currently completing a Masters degree in Composition and Creative Music Practice from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in the University of Limerick. His compositions focus mainly on creating soundscapes which combine real world and artificial elements.
