Contact Improvisation with Steve Batts
CONTACT IMPROVISATION
Weekly classes on a Thursday night. To view current programme, click here.
Echo Echo started weekly classes in Contact Improvisation in Autumn 2010. The classes have developed and a group has formed with various abilities and experience levels.
The movement form is a key part of Echo Echo's dance style and is accessible to anyone with an interest in dance. It can help build strength and stability as well as challenge the imagination with it's improvisory feel.
Read the information below for more background on Contact Improvisation. If you want to participate, call the office on 028 7130 8883 or just come along.
Participants evaluations:
"I definitely learned, developed and rediscovered how natural and simply beautiful it is to dance - with anybody regardless of their background, shape or ability."
"I learned how to move in the space with different bodies, personalities, habits, and history. I developed my awareness to help, encourage and explore movement for myself and others."
"A highlight was the investigation of the space between people, it doesn't always have to be big and loud, dance can be very small and intimate yet extremely powerful."
"I'm usually very cynical but this was totally awesome. I have a tendency to panic a bit, but not here - I felt totally at ease."
What is Contact Improvisation?
It is an open dance/movement form, accessible to everyone in which participants explore movement through supporting the weight of another person, rolling, falling, leaning, sliding and suspending.
Steve Batts is Co-artistic Director of Echo Echo but also teaches Contact Improvisation (C.I) internationally. Steve has been dancing and teaching Contact since the early 1980s. He describes it as one of his biggest and most consistent joys in life.
He has taught workshops at many dance festivals in countries such as Israel, Russia, Germany and Romania. While Contact Improvisation has a huge influence on Steve's artistic work, he tries to teach it from the point of view of a participant rather than a director.
